成功者の言葉でよく『遠回りは結局近道である』『遠回りしていない人は深みがない』などと言われることがあります。
今回はこれについて深堀してみます。
近道したい！そこへ誘う・・・
昨今、ネットであらゆる情報を簡単に取れるようになりました。
「これだけやれば成功者になれる」的な謳い文句が多くあります。錬金術であったり、ゴルフで言えばスコアが良くなったり、飛距離が伸びたり。英語が簡単に話せる(使える？)ようになったり、身体が強くなったり柔らかくなったりダイエット出来たり。カメ飼育だったら安全に飼育出来たり、冬眠のさせ方。燃費の良い運転の仕方。雑誌やメディアなどではそれだけ人の目につくかが収益のポイントなのでキャッチーな言葉や画像、映像で見る人を誘います。
仕事においては過去の先輩方のノウハウや失敗事例がデータ化されていたり、そういったものが生かされるような手順、仕組みが構築されていたり。
敢えて遠回り
では、一方(ここで言う)遠回りとはどういうことでしょう？
『人に頼らず、自分で試行錯誤を繰り返しながら最終的に自分の目標を達成すること』、としておきます。
異論は多いと思いますが、自分なりに例をいくつか挙げてみます。どちらが良い、と思うかは自分次第です。その時の状況、優先順位次第です。
英語：簡単に使えるようになる？
英会話スクールや教材の宣伝文句では簡単に勉強出来る、身につく、といったようなものがあります。また、アメリカなど英語圏に良く出張で行く人、実際に生活している人はすぐに英語が話せるようになる、と思っている人も多いと思います。実際そうなんでしょう。英語話したければ取り合えずアメリカに行け、みたいな。実際、留学やワーホリで海外生活している人の方がしていない人よりは話せると思います。ただ、海外駐在を何年もしていてもあまり会話出来ない人もいます。この差は何でしょう？
そういった環境に見に置くコト、ではなくてその環境をどう活用するか、で差が出ます。
私自身の経験でもそうですが、その環境にいるとその環境に対応するために日本にいる時以上にハードな努力をしなければなりません。それは能動的に自ら吸収することです。テレビを付けての英語漬け、アメリカ人ばかりの場で英語シャワーを浴びるだけでは決して英語は上達しないと思います。
ゴルフ：飛距離を伸ばしたい！
新クラブが発表されて前クラブよりも２０ヤード伸びる！〇〇打法で３０ヤード伸びた！筋トレして２０ヤード伸びた！整体パンツ(みたいなもの)を履くだけでヘッドスピードが３ポイント伸びた！アマチュアゴルフの世界では飛距離が永遠のテーマです。それをくすぐるキャッチコピーが溢れかえっています。
実際飛距離を伸ばしている人もいます。ただ、その瞬間だけでなく、ずっと飛距離を伸ばした人って意外と多くないです。その瞬間は伸びるコトはあります。ただ、実際に年間通じて飛距離が伸びているか、というとそうでもなかったり、ある時急に「あれっ？」となったり。
私も飛距離を伸ばしたい、と思ってから色々手を付けましたが(笑)、4～5年経ってようやく2～30ヤード伸びてきました。50歳過ぎてからですので結構な成果と思いますが如何でしょう？色々やり過ぎてどれが効果的なのかは分かりませんが、逆に一時的なものではなく、安定的に平均飛距離が伸びました。
仕事の進め方
自分が若い時、よく先輩社員に相談するとあたかも簡単に『あぁ、あの部品はああだからね』『この回路でそうやったらそりゃそうなるよね』などと簡単に答えてもらえることがありました。やはり経験がものを言うんだなぁ、と思って、自分もあれくらいの年代になればああなれるんだろうな、と漠然と思っていました。
しかし、多少は近づけたものの、その先輩方の年代になってもその境地には達していないなぁ、と感じていました。
何が違うのかなぁ、と考えてみると先輩方は勤務時間中ほぼほぼ実験室に籠って実機の評価をしてその結果から原因を究明して対策をする、というPDCAを何回も何回も回していました。自分の時はある程度合理化されてパソコンとにらめっこしながら仕事をしたり、実機の評価は請負外注さんに頼んでその結果のみ頂く、といったことが多くありました。実機がどういう条件でどういう動きをしてどういう結果になるのか、というのを現場では見ていません。また請負外注さんは設計者の設計の意図を分からず言われた通りに動かしているだけです。
今は時効、ということで触れますが、先輩の時代は残業し放題、なんならサービス残業までして自分で設計した実機に向き合っていました。我々の頃は残業規制が掛かり、設計は先輩の上手く動作した回路や部品をほぼそのまま使いまわし、評価は請負外注さんにお願いする、ことが多くなっていました。
会社としてはそれで(一時的に)効率的に回ることは回るのですが、後々しょうもない設計不具合があったり、後輩社員にアドバイスできなかったり、と言ったことが起こり、設計者のレベル自体がかなり下がった気がします。
遠回り
今はITによる合理化、成功者の成功プロセスの一部を切り取ってのノウハウ化などによっての近道法が色々紹介されています。
ただ、そういったものが氾濫している中でも実際に成功している人はそれなりに遠回りをしているようです。自分なりに試行錯誤して遠回りしているともし失敗したり挫折したりしたとしてもそこからの復旧がかなり早いと思います。
早く成功に結び付けたい、という思いは誰しも持っていると思います。先日のブログでも触れた大木の話しで安易に葉や花をつけることに飛びつくのではなくてしっかりと根と幹を鍛えることに時間を使うことが遠回り、結果的に近道、深みが出る、ということに繋がるのではないでしょうか。また、それが『緊急ではなく重要なこと』のために『刃を研ぐ』ことになります。
